2012-2013 MES PTO COMMITTEES


All Tops -  Collects tops and labels from Box Tops, Campbells, Tyson and Coke products from classrooms. Counts, sorts & sends them in for reimbursement. Connects school to Harris Teeter, Target, etc. for a percent of sales.

Coupon Books- Sell coupon books at the beginning of the year through classroom distribution. Manages the payment or return of books from each student.

Cultural Arts - Focuses on developing awareness about different cultures & fine arts. Helps plan and implement the annual Global Festival. Assists as requested with any music and art programs implemented by the school.

Faculty/Staff Appreciation – Plans various staff appreciation events throughout the year including the Welcome Back Breakfast for staff in August, food and giveaways at the monthly staff meetings and Teacher Appreciation Week in February.

Fall Festival - Organizes a Fall Festival fundraiser to be held in October. Includes planning, vendor selection, maintaining budget, recruiting volunteers, developing sponsorship packages and securing sponsors to offset cost of event. Typically includes an auction which needs a separate chairperson. Many volunteers needed for various jobs and on the day of the event.

Family Fitness Night – Plans a winter evening program for families to engage in physical activity events together. Coordinates with local fitness-related businesses to set up stations at the school where families can visit to learn more about ways to get active and stay fit. This is not a fundraiser.

Family Fun – Plans 2-3 family events, i.e. Checkers game, ice skating, Knights game. Also coordinates 3-4 family nights at area restaurants where a percentage of the sales are donated back to the PTO.

Golf Tournament – Organizes a golf tournament to take place in May.

Health & Safety - Focuses on providing education and events related to the health and safety of our students and family. Programs include a speaker series for the C.A.R.E. initiative.

Just 2 Hours – Keeps a list of available volunteers to be called on as needed, these could be floating volunteers or people who just have 2 hours. Organizes these volunteers when the school needs help with events (i.e. the Blood Drive, Hearing & Vision Screening etc...) This committee provides general support to the PTO in various ways needed to support our programs and MES.

Marvin Cares – Works with school counselor & other school personnel to implement community outreach programs such as the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Red Cross blood drive, etc.

Media Volunteers/Events– The Media Center needs volunteers to help students find and checkout books, pull books for teachers, help with the bulletin board, re-shelve books and assist at the Book Fairs (we have 2 Book Fairs per school year) and the Book Swap. At the Book Fairs, volunteers can help in setting up, tearing down, assisting children in finding books and helping with re-ordering books. At the annual Marvin Elementary Book Swap, volunteers are needed to help separate books by age group. The Media Center
Committee is dividing these responsibilities between two chair people:

     • Media Volunteers Chair - This chairperson organizes the volunteers that work in the media center by maintaining the volunteer sign up sheet and regularly notifying the group of volunteers of open volunteer time slots.

     • Media Book Fair Chair - This chairperson organizes and implements the two book fairs that take place at MES each year, as well as the Book Swap that takes place at the end of the school year.

Membership – Encourages parents & teachers to become PTO members; compiles spreadsheet of all PTO members; sells memberships at various events throughout the year.

Odyssey of the Mind – Organizes teams of students to participate in this competitive academic program.  Coaches for each team are needed. Competition is in February or March.

Room Parent Coordinator – Coordinates assignment of & communication with each room parent.

School Beautification – Keeps grounds looking well-groomed by planting flowers, adding mulch, weeding, etc.

Scrip – Organizes this program that gives us the ability to purchase gift cards to a variety of stores with a % donated to our school; includes awareness and management of the program. This chair works to promote this option with all room parents (for teacher gifts) & other committee chairs - anytime a gift card is to be purchased.

Spiritwear – Works with vendors to design and sell Marvin Elementary School spiritwear to our school community.

Sun Safety - Plans and implements monthly programs to promote sun safety awareness and education to students and families. Committee will apply for a grant from the American Academy of Dermatology in the fall of 2012 for the purposes of adding shade structures to the MES playground.

Walk to School - Plans our annual walk to school day.

Welcome – Prepares and maintains a packet of important welcome information to be distributed to parents/guardians of students that enroll throughout the year. Contacts new families to welcome them to MES and to answer any questions they may have.

Yearbook – Designs & coordinates the publication of annual yearbook; takes photographs, designs pages & distributes yearbooks at end of year.

Youngest & Only Directory – Compiles & updates the Y/O list; compiles & distributes the student directory.

***NOTE: Possible cluster 5K run in the spring of 2013***
